About Us

The San Joaquin County Probation Department is a proud part of our local communities and an integral piece of the justice system. We provide safe custodial care for juveniles and adults in ways that help uphold public safety. As a partner to and bridge between the Courts, the detention system, and the community, we provide the prevention, investigation, and supervision services needed to make the communities we serve safer and stronger.

We are committed to and live and work by a set of standards. Our officers and staff are committed to excellence, professionalism, and integrity. The Department’s shared values include excellence, importance of the individual, team concepts, ethical conduct, professionalism, importance of community and a safe and healthy environment. As a public entity we are in service to our community and our daily duties include strategic collaboration with community partners. We recognize that providing all the services our clients on probation need is not something we can do alone.

To better serve San Joaquin County, our efforts are continuous as we seek opportunities for partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, schools, community-based organizations, and residents. We rely on these partnerships and collaborations to achieve greater outcomes. As the law enforcement field is everchanging, we strive to achieve our mission every day.

Our Mission Statement

The San Joaquin County Probation Department is committed to increasing public safety, supporting victims, and reducing recidivism through client accountability and support; thereby making our community safer and stronger. We are dedicated to inspiring positive change by delivering proven evidence-based practices, which assist clients in identifying a path to productive life choices.

Supporting a Safer, Stronger Community

Adult Probation

As directed by the Court, a Grant of Formal Probation provides an offender with the benefit of supervision by a Probation Officer in the community as an alternative to jail or prison.

Juvenile Probation

Juvenile Probation allows a youth to live at home with their parent/guardian, while following specific terms and conditions ordered by the Court. At a minimum, every juvenile placed at home on probation must attend school, have a curfew, and pay restitution.

Juvenile Detention

A temporary detention facility for youth that provides a humane, safe, and secure place facility to care for youth from the time of their booking through their Court proceedings and commitment.

Local Community Corrections

This is the supervision of criminal offenders in a local jurisdiction, as opposed to confinement in secure state Correctional Facilities. The two main types of community corrections supervision are probation and parole. Probation’s Local Community Supervision program, provides offender accountability, while delivering rehabilitation services and surveillance.

What We Do

It is not feasible – socially or economically – to imprison all offenders, making probation an important and cost-effective alternative for offender management. The San Joaquin County Probation Department is integral in supporting law enforcement through four distinct, but interconnected functions that provide evidence-based interventions, reduce recidivism, increase public safety and reduce victimization.

The Probation Department assists the court in helping identify suitable candidates for probation and recommends appropriate sanctions to assist the offender in changing their behavior, including time in custody, fines, restitution, and community service or treatment options. Probation Officers also design a supervision plan for offenders to help guide them toward being law-abiding citizens.
